MESSIAH'S COMING TO REIGN

                                Zechariah 14:1-21

At the beginning of our study in Zechariah, I tried to imagine each of us sitting in an auditorium watching, on the big screen, the unfolding drama of God's prophetic plan for Israel and her future. Following the 10-fold vision, there was an intermission noted in chapters seven and eight. During the first “oracle”(9-11), we saw Zechariah get involved in the unfolding drama. He dressed as a shepherd, the personification of Jehovah. But Israel, His sheep, refused to accept Him. Instead they sold Him for 30 pieces of silver. The final “oracle” however, describes the Lord's involvement in Israel's future and the dramatic moment when “the Lord God comes, and all the holy ones with Him”(v.5b). The climax of history will be the personal return of Christ to earth! “This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven” (Acts 1: 11).

John MacArthur summarizes this closing chapter by stating: “Chapter 14 is an amplification of 13: 8,9. Prior to Israel’s national conversion (cf.12: 10-13: 1), the Jews will make a pact with a false messiah (cf. Dan.9: 27), known as the foolish shepherd (cf.11: 15-17) or Antichrist. In the middle of that 7-year covenant, Antichrist will break his treaty with Israel and require the worship of him alone (Dan.9: 24-27; Matt:24: 15; 2 Thess.2: 3-4). When Israel refuses, the armies of the world will gather to do battle, climaxing in a great siege of Jerusalem and the Battle of Armageddon (Rev.19). Following the Lord’s victory at the battle (cf.19:11-16), will come the full restoration of Israel as anticipated in Hos.14: 4-7; Joel 3: 18-21; Amos 9: 13-15; Mic.4: 1-3; Zeph.3: 14-20” (The MacArthur Study Bible, p.1356).

Zechariah picks up the pen in this last chapter and reveals further events concerning the siege of Jerusalem toward the end of the Tribulation. It also pictures Israel’s deliverance at Messiah’s return. Chapter 12 had already presented a prophetic picture of this siege. However, the first 2 verses provide the backdrop for God’s supernatural deliverance and victorious return as Israel’s King.
Charles Feinberg adds, “It is customary with the prophets to give a general statement and then expand the theme later by the addition of details” (God Remembers: A Study of the Book of Zechariah, p.248).

Verses 1-2 A day of the Lord is coming when your plunder will be divided among you. I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem to fight against it; the city will be captured, the houses ransacked, and the women raped. Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people will not be taken from the city.”

These verses were not fulfilled during the siege of Jerusalem in 70AD under Titus since all nations were not gathered around Jerusalem and the Lord did not “stand on the Mount of Olieves” to defeat the enemies of Israel. Boice states: “The ending of chapter 13 spoke of the destruction of two-thirds of the people and the preservation and purification of the remaining one-third. This is consistent with the sacking of Jerusalem described n 14:2 and preservation of a remnant in 14:5. In general terms, 14:1-5 is also consistent with 12:1-9, although the earlier passage does not say that Jerusalem will be overrun before God intervenes to save it and its people” (The Minor Prophets, Vol. 2, p.563). Its fulfillment then lies in the future after Antichrist breaks his seven year treaty with Israel in an effort to exterminate all Jews. This will lead to that final siege when Nations gather around Jerusalem for the climactic battle of Armageddon which according to Luke 21:24 terminates the “times of the Gentiles.”

Verses 3-8 Then the Lord will go out against those nations, as he fights in the day of battle. On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem and the mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south. You will flee by the mountain valley, for it will extend to Azel. You will flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. It will be a unique day, without daytime or nighttime—a day known to the Lord. When evening comes, there will be light. On that day living water will flow out from Jerusalem, half to the eastern sea and half to the western sea, in summer and in winter.”

Just when it seems that all hope is gone, the Lord Himself appears as the victorious conqueror over the nations pillaging Israel. His descent on the Mount of Olives creates a split running east and west. The great valley will afford an easy escape route from the final anti-Semitic genocide described in verse 2. McComiskey adds, “the geological shift of the mountain northward and southward created an awareness of awesome power, a vivid pictorial representation of the activity of the invisible God of history” (The Minor Prophets, p.1230).

Like a fireworks display on the 4th of July celebration, a number of cosmic events are summarized in the last 13 verses of this chapter.

  1. Verses 6-7 describe the unique condition of the “day” of His appearing: “without daytime or nighttime.” His glorious appearing causes the celestial luminaries to no longer have their normal function. The Apostle John paints a similar picture by stating: “the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God is its light”(Rev.21: 23). David Baron explains “a day for Jehovah”: as “the day set apart and appointed by Him, not only for the display of His majesty and the vindication of the righteousness of His character and ways, but it is the day of the manifestation of His Divine might and the glory of the destruction of Israel's enemies, and the salvation of His own people” (The Visions and Prophecies of Zechariah, p.495).

  2. Verse 8 indicates that “living waters” will flow from Jerusalem running continuously eastward toward the Dead Sea and westward toward the Mediterranean. It seems best to view the “waters” as both literal and symbolic. John describes the New Jerusalem as a “pure river of water of life proceeding from the throne of God” (Rev.22: 1-2) Again, we are not certain if both interpretive thoughts are intended. One thing is certain! When the Lord comes back to reign Israel will once again become like the Garden of Eden. This prophecy is connected with Joel 3:18, Ezekiel 47:2, and Revelation 22:1-2 where “living waters” come forth from Jerusalem for the “healing of the nations.”

  3. Verses 9-11 makes it clear that Christ will rule from Jerusalem; the surrounding hills will be leveled like the Arabah; while the City itself will be elevated and safely inhabited: “The Lord will be king over the whole earth...the whole land, from Geba to Rimmon, will be like the Arabah... Jerusalem will be raised up.” Geba was one of the border towns to the north of Judah, while Rimmon was in the southern border of Palestine, north of Beersheba. Jerusalem will stand out above all the rest of the countryside. This same prophecy is spoken of by Isaiah and Micah: “In the last days the mountain of the Lord's temple ...will be raised above the hills, and all nations will stream to it”(Is.2:2); “the mountain of the Lord's temple ...will be raised above the hills, and peoples will stream to it” (Micah 4:1).

  1. Verses 12-15 gives one last glimpse of the Lord’s intervention on behalf of His people. The defeat of hostile nations waging war against Jerusalem is vividly descriptive: “bodies rotting even before they hit the ground; eyes rotting in their sockets; and tongues rotting in their mouths” (v.12). God’s awesome power will be so singularly displayed that His enemies in panic will kill each other (v.13) leaving their wealth behind as booty for victorious Israel. (v.14)

  2. Verses 16-19 describe the universal worship of Jesus as King over the whole earth: “Then the survivors from all the nations that have attacked Jerusalem will go up year after year to worship the King, the Lord Almighty.” The celebration will be like the Feast of Tabernacles in Old Testament times (Lev.23: 41-43). The celebration marked the final harvest of the year’s crops and its festive gathering was filled with thanksgiving and praise. The millennial celebration will likewise be a “feast” marking the final, joyful regathering of Israel in full Kingdom blessing along with the in-gathering of the Nations.

  3. Verses 20-21 “On that day Holy To The Lord will be inscribed on the bells of the horses, and the cooking pots in the Lord;s house...every pot in Jerusalem and Judah will be holy to the Lord Almighty.” “Holiness” will be the nature of the coming messianic kingdom. So pervasive will be the rule of righteousness that even the most common objects will be “holy to the Lord.” The assurance that no “Canaanite” will exist in His Temple guarantees the end of all impurity in God’s kingdom.

The King is coming with power and great glory! “On his robe and on his thigh he has the name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS” (Rev.19: 16). The stage is set for this final, climactic drama in human history. The chapter is about to close! The curtain rises on this majestic, awesome picture of Israel’s Messiah descending from heaven on a white horse, followed by myriads of saints on white horses (Rev.19: 11) to help inaugurate His thousand year reign. Then the “kingdoms of this world will become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ and he shall reign for ever and ever” (Rev.11: 15).

THE VICTORY OF MESSIAH KING

THE FINAL ACT UPON LIFE’S STAGE
REVEALS THE BLOODIEST SCENES OF ALL
WHERE DEATH AND CARNAGE, RAPE AND SWORD
ARE MET WITH JUDGMENT FROM THE LORD.

THE ARMIES OF THE WORLD ARE SEEN
AROUND MEGIDDO’S OPEN PLAIN
WHERE REVELATION FORCES MEET
AND SATAN’S PLOT ENDS IN DEFEAT.

AS ANTICHRIST TAKES DAVID’S THRONE
DEMANDING WORSHIP FOR HIS OWN
THE BROKEN COVENANT HE MADE
LEAVES EVERY JEW IN SHOCK AFRAID.

THEN SUDDENLY ALL LIGHTS GROW DIM
THE SUN AND MOON REFUSE TO SHINE
A SPECIAL DAY BURSTS INTO SIGHT
THE BRIDE AND GROOM APPEAR IN WHITE.

THE KING-MESSIAH TAKES HIS STAND
AND WITH ONE BREATH DESTROYS HIS FOES
WHEN EVERY WARRIOR’S FLESH DROPS OFF
IT IS THE LAST OF ISRAEL’S WOES.

THEN SATAN’S REIGN WILL BE REPLACED
A THOUSAND YEARS OF LASTING PEACE
WILL FLOOD THE WORLD FROM ZION’S THRONE
WHERE JESUS CHRIST WILL REIGN ALONE.

JERUSALEM WILL RISE IN HEIGHT
AND ALL THE NATIONS THAT REMAIN
WILL JOIN WITH JEWS TO CELEBRATE
THE PRAISE AND HONOR DUE HIS NAME.

WHEN PROPHECY AND HISTORY MERGE
THE FINAL SCENE WILL END IN TIME
AND HOLINESS WILL BE THE SEAL
BEFORE WHOM EVERYONE WILL KNEEL.

                                             THOUGHT QUESTIONS

1. Three major events are described in this last chapter: the Great Tribulation invasion of Jerusalem; the destruction of those Nation attacking her; and, the establishment of Christ's millennial reign. As you read Daniel 9:27, what event triggers this final battle?

2. What are some of the contributing factors leading to the final Armageddon Battle (vs.1-2)?

3. Verse 4 seems to be connected with the seventh bowl judgment of Revelation 16:18-19. Explain! How might this great earthquake help the Jewish people during this time?

4. The special "day" described in verses 6-7 is identical to the passage in Matthew 24:29-30. What are some of the things that will make this particular day so uniquely different from other days? What "day" is he describing and why might the Lord want that "day" to be uniquely different from any other day that has ever existed?

5. Verse 8 describes a river that flows out of Jerusalem. Is that the same as the one described in Isaiah 35:1,6; Ezekiel 47:1-12 and Psalm 46:1-4? What is your opinion?

6. In summary: what will happen when Jesus returns to earth again? Describe some of the major events. What will happen to the Antichrist, false prophet and Satan? What part does Israel and the Church play during the Millennial Kingdom? What then should we live in the light of these world-shaking events?

INTERMISSION

                              Zechariah 7-8

The prophetic drama on history's stage is temporarily suspended! If you had imagined yourself sitting in an auditorium for sometime, a break for a much-needed stretch would help. Of course, by the time the next chapter begins, approximately two years had passed since Zechariah's vision. The Temple was well on its way to completion. In the audience a delegation from Bethel had some important questions. So the intermission time gave them a chance to corner Zechariah with questions relating to “fasts and feasts.” Chapters 7 and 8 becomes a question and answer session before Act 2 begins. The rest of the Book will be largely an amplification of what was seen in the earlier vision.

“In the fourth year of King Darius, the word of the LORD came to Zechariah on the fourth day of the ninth month, the month of Kislev. The people of Bethel had sent Sharezer and Regem-Meleck, together with their men, to entreat the LORD by asking the priests of the house of the LORD Almighty and the prophets, ‘Should I mourn and fast in the fifth month, as I have done for so many years?’”(Vs.1-3)

The seventy-year captivity had ended and many Jews returned to help build the temple and the walls of Jerusalem, which still lay in ruins. Sadness and sorrow over Judah’s fall to the Babylonians, led them to set aside certain “days”for fasting. Now that temple was coming to completion, the question arose: “should these fasts be continued or not?”

There was only one “fast” the Mosaic Law had established: “the Day of Atonement.” Following the destruction of Jerusalem, however, several other “fasts” were added. For example, in July they would mourn and fast over the captivity of Jerusalem and exile of the royal seed from the city (Jeremiah 39:2-9;52:6-7); in August, they mourned over its burning and destruction of their Temple(2 Kings 25:8); in October, they commemorated the murder of Gedaliah whom Nebuchadnezzar had placed as their governor (Jeremiah 41:43); and in January, they fasted in remembrance of the day Nebuchadnezzar began his siege of Jerusalem(Jeremiah 39:1;52:4).

“Then the word of the LORD Almighty came to me: ‘ask all the people of the land and the priests. “When you fasted and mourned in the firth and seventh months for the past seventy years, was it really for me that you fasted? And when you were eating and drinking, were you not just feasting for yourselves?” (Vs.4-6)

The answer Yahweh begins with is very personal: “what were your motives in theses fasts?” They felt sorry for Jerusalem’s destruction but the spirit of true repentance was absent. Instead, their fasting turned mostly to feasting which satisfied themselves but not the Lord. “Their hypocrisy appeared because they showed more concern about a ceremony of human institution than about moral obedience...they falsely made the fast an end intrinsically meritorious in itself, not a means toward God's glory in their sanctification” (Jamieson Fausset and Brown, pp.724-725). The rest of chapter 7, Zechariah explains what the Lord desired (vs.8-10), what His people actually did (vs.11-12) and what God had to do (vs.13-14).
“This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the alien or the poor in your hearts do not think evil of each other’” (Vs.9-10).

Did they do what God said? No! Verses 11-12 indicate that “they refused to pay attention…. turned their backs and stopped up their ears…made their hearts as hard as flint.” God warned Israel and Judah over and over again through His prophets, but they refused to listen and repent. So God sent Nebuchadnezzar to destroy Judah and Jerusalem and “scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations…the land was left so desolate…they made their pleasant land desolate” (v.14). For 70 years the land remained desolate because of their disobedience and rebellion.

“Again the word of the LORD Almighty came to me. This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘I am very jealous for Zion; I am burning with jealousy for her’” (8:1-2)

Zechariah then moves from the past history to the present. Dr. McComiskey explains the transition: “The previous chapter (7:14) left us with a mental picture of the land lying in eerie desolation during the captivity. In the discourse here, however, we have a different picture: Jerusalem’s streets ring with the voices of playing children as elderly people look on” (The Minor Prophets, p.1137). While present blessings are intended to give His people some consolation in the midst of their struggles to rebuild Jerusalem’s temple and its walls (vs.9-11), the picture God outlines extends to the distant future when he “returns to Zion and dwells in Jerusalem…called the City of Truth” (v.3). This beautiful scene paints the streets with children playing together in peace under the watchful eyes of the elderly (vs.4-5).

Zechariah then tells of a great in-gathering of people from east and west as they pour into Jerusalem. “I will save my people from the countries of the east and the west. I will bring them back to life in Jerusalem; they will be my people, and I will be faithful and righteous to them as their God.” Old Testament prophetic books are replete with prophecies of Israel’s blessings in the millennial kingdom. Repentant Israel will then flourish like a fruitful vine yielding its lushes grapes (vs.12-13). Under God’s favor and promptings, they will “speak the truth to each other, and render sound judgment in their courts; no plotting evil against their neighbor, and not swearing falsely (vs.16-17).

With the intermission almost over the prophet gives the delegation from Bethel a final word of encouragement. He goes back to the original question about the different “fast days” and tells them that one-day the “fasts of the fourth, fifth, seventh and tenth months will become joyful and glad occasions and happy festivals for Judah” (v.19). The final picture is filled with praise, worship and joyful celebration as people from all nations pour into Jerusalem to seek the LORD Almighty (v.22). Then he closes with these words in verse 23: “In those days ten men from all languages and nations will take firm hold of one Jew by the edge of his robe and say, ‘Let us go with you, because we have heard that God is with you.”

One can almost feel the rustling sounds of the crowds taking their places before the next scene opens. Dr. Coleman Luck sets the stage for the next act when he states, “From visions, the style of the book now changes to direct discourse from the Lord through Zechariah. The rest of the book is largely an amplification of that which has gone before, with a number of very striking parallels” (Zechariah, p.69).

                     ZECHARIAH 7-8

TWO YEARS PASS BY ON HISTORY'S STAGE
          BEFORE THE NEXT PROPHETIC PAGE
          REVEALED GOD'S COSMIC MYSTERY PLAN
FOR ISRAEL IN THEIR PROMISED LAND.

          THE INTERMISSION TIME WAS SPENT
          WITH QUESTIONS BETHELITES HAD SENT
          ABOUT IMPORTANT DAYS TO FAST
THAT CALLED FOR MOURNING FROM THE PAST.

THE PROPHET SOUGHT AN ANSWER CLEAR
FOR SCATTERED JEWS BOTH FAR AND NEAR
WHO WERE RELEASED FROM BABYLON'S HAND
AND GIVEN BACK THEIR CONQUERED LAND.

BUT SPECIAL DAYS TO MOURN AND WEEP
HAD TURNED THEIR FAST FOR FOOD TO EAT
THE CALL FOR JUSTICE, LOVE AND GRACE
WAS ABSENT FROM THE HEBREW RACE.

A STRONG REBUKE FROM YAHWEH CAME
BECAUSE OF ALL THEIR SIN AND SHAME
THEY WOULD NOT TURN AND DO HIS WILL
          UNTIL HIS JUDGMENT DID FULFILL.

YET IN THE MIDST OF THEIR DISTRESS
THE PROMISES OF PEACE AND REST
TURNED ISRAEL'S NIGHT OF GLOOM AND PAIN
TO LASTING PRAISE THROUGH YAHWEH'S NAME.

THE LORD ALMIGHTY SPOKE IN LOVE
          ASSURING JUDAH FROM ABOVE
THEIR TEMPLE SOON WOULD BE COMPLETE
AND ALL OPPOSED WOULD FACE DEFEAT.

BUT THEN HE LEAPS THROUGH SPACE AND TIME
WHERE FEAST AND DANCE WILL THEN COMBINE
AS KING MESSIAH CLAIMS HIS THRONE
THE SOVEREIGN LORD WILL REIGN ALONE.

ISRAEL MY GLORY

                DANIEL 9:24-27
WHILE READING JEREMIAH'S SCROLLS
THE PROPHET SENSED THE TIME HAD COME
FOR JUDAH TO BE FREED AT LAST
FROM SOVEREIGN JUDGMENT FOR THEIR PAST.

THROUGH DANIEL'S INTERCESSORY PRAYER
WITH DEEP CONTRITION FOR THEIR GUILT
A BROKEN HEART BEFORE GOD'S THRONE
BECAME THE GIFT THAT WOULD ATONE.

THE ANGEL THEN REVEALED A PLAN
BY USING MULTIPLES OF YEARS
THE TIME OF CURSE WOULD FINALLY END
WITH PROMISED BLESSINGS TO ATTEND.

BEFORE THE CHART COULD BE EXPLAINED
THE ANGEL MADE IT VERY CLEAR
THE DUAL SUBJECTS OF HIS WILL
REFERRED TO JEWS AND ZION'S HILL.

THE WEEKS OF YEARS THAT STRETCHED THROUGH TIME
WILL BRING AN END TO WICKEDNESS
FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS WILL CROWN THE LAND
WHEN GOD'S ANOINTED TAKES HIS STAND.

FOUR HUNDRED EIGHTY THREE LONG YEARS
BEGAN WITH BUILDING ZION'S WALL
BUT WHEN THE PRINCE, MESSIAH CAME
UPON THE CROSS HE HUNG IN SHAME.

THE PROPHET'S CLOCK THEN STOPPED IN TIME
AND SOON ROME'S FORCES CRUSHED "THE LAND."
BUT TWENTY CENTURIES NOW HAVE PAST
YET HATRED FOR THE JEWS STILL LAST.

THEN GOD REVEALED ONE FINAL WEEK
WHEN IN THE MIDST OF WORLD WIDE STRIFE
TEN NATIONS WILL ARISE TO CLAIM
THE KINGDOM ROME ONCE RULED WITH FAME.

THE BEAST WHO'S "LITTLE HORN"APPEARS
WILL BE THE COUNTERFEIT OF CHRIST
WHOSE SIGNS AND WONDERS ON DISPLAY
PROPELS HIM TO BE KING THAT DAY.

A TREATY SIGNED FOR SEVEN YEARS
BETWEEN THE ARABS AND THE JEWS
WILL MARK THE TRIBULATION START
BEFORE ALL NATIONS FALL APART.

THE ANTICHRIST WILL MOVE FROM ROME
AND CLAIM THE TEMPLE FOR HIS THRONE
WITH BROKEN TREATIES NOW IN TWO
HE'LL TRY TO KILL OFF EVERY JEW.

WHILE ALL THE NATIONS OF THE EARTH
ARE GATHERING ON MEGIDDO'S PLAIN
THE WARRIOR KING FROM HEAVEN'S THRONE
WILL MAKE HIS AWESOME PRESENCE KNOWN.

WITH JUST ONE WORD AT HIS COMMAND
THE NATIONS UNDER ANTICHRIST
WILL ALL BE SWEPT FROM EARTH TO HELL
AS HIS PREDICTIONS DO FORETELL.--B. Pent

Zechariah 9:1-17 -- TWO KINGS REVEALED
THE SECOND ACT ONCE MORE BEGINS
WITH SCENES FAR DIFFERENT THAN BEFORE
TWO MIGHTY KINGS APPEAR ON STAGE
ALONG THE ROUTE TO ISRAEL'S SHORE.

THE FIRST LOOKED LIKE A FIERCE-HORNED GOAT
A GRECIAN KING OF YOUTHFUL AGE
DESTROYING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT
WITH UNRELENTING MIGHT AND RAGE.

THE YOUNG COMMANDER ROSE IN STRENGTH
BY CRUSHING PERSIA'S NORTHERN FLANK
THEN SYRIA, TYRE AND SOUTHERN TOWNS
BECAME THE TROPHIES OF HIS RANK.

WHEN ALEXANDER'S FORCES MET
OUTSIDE JERUSALEM'S HOLY LAND
A MIRACLE FROM HISTORY CAME
THE VISION OF GOD'S WARNING HAND.

THE HIGH PRIEST WITH EACH MAN IN WHITE
MARCHED OUT TO MEET THE COMING KING
BUT THROUGH A VISION YAHWEH GAVE
THE LAND WAS SPARED FROM CONQUERING.

YET ISRAEL FAILED TO UNDERSTAND
THE WAY TO FREEDOM WAS MUCH MORE
THAN CASTING OFF THE YOKE OF ROME
BY SOME MESSIAH OF THEIR OWN.

THE PROPHET SAW A SECOND KING
WHO RODE UPON A DONKEY'S COLT
HIS HUMBLE BIRTH FROM DAVID'S LINE
GAVE PROOF HE WAS THE LORD DIVINE.

BUT ISRAEL IN THEIR IGNORANCE THOUGHT
A MILITARY PRINCE WOULD COME
SO WHEN HOSANNA SONGS GAVE PRAISE
THE CRIES OF "CRUCIFY" WERE RAISED.

BUT ZECHARIAH VIEWED A DAY
FULFILLING PROMISES GOD MADE
THAT AFTER "JACOB'S TROUBLED" DAYS
MESSIAH'S KING WOULD COME ABLAZE.

THE BRANCH FROM JUDAH'S PROMISED LINE
WILL REIGN IN REGAL MAJESTY
AND GRAFTED ISRAEL WILL SHINE FORTH
AS HIS CROWNED JEWELS OF ROYALTY.

THEN DESERT LANDS WILL BLOOM AGAIN
AND PEACE THE GIFT FOR EVERY MAN
FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS IS HIS ALONE
WHO SITS AND REIGNS FROM ZION'S THRONE.

THOUGHT QUESTIONS
1. The word "oracle/burden" means "to bear" and signifies something heavy or burdensome. What may have been some reasons for the use of
this word?
2. The first 8 verses indicate battles and destruction taking place all around Israel and later in verse 13 Greece is mentioned as a part of it. As
you read Daniel 7:6 and 8:5-7 Alexander the Great is described as a four-headed leopard with wings and a strong he-goat. What kind of
picture is conjured up in your mind after reading these verses? what fear may have gripped their hearts as he was nearing Jerusalem?
3. What affect did Alexander's conquests have on the future expansion of the Gospel in the first century?
4. Verses 9-10 describe the coming of another King. Why does Jesus ride into Jerusalem on a colt instead of a horse? Wouldn't that seem
odd in view of Israel's Messianic expectation? What confusion might have entered their minds after reading verse 10?
5. The "blood covenant" mentioned in verse 11 goes back to his unconditional promise made to Abraham and his seed in Genesis 15:1-10.
The rest of this chapter jumps from Greece to the dark, war days of Armageddon (vs.14-15) and the personal return of Christ (vs.16-17).
What comfort or encouragement would this give to this small returned remnant as they faced present and future struggles as a Nation?
